PORTFOLIO: NATIONAL DEFENSE & SECURITY
LEED® - NC (currently pursuing)
Navy Fitness Center
Naval Base, Guam
Athletic Design Consultant: HNTB Architects and Engineers
The project consists of 50,531 SF single story addition to the existing 2-story, 26,694 SF Charles King Gymnasium. The new addition will contain a fitness area, gym with two basketball courts, multi-fitness area, locker/shower rooms, receiving/repair/ recycling area, juice bar, administrative areas, resale outlet and spline. The existing Charles King Gymnasium will be renovated with an orientation toward family fitness programs. The existing gymnasium will be reconfigured to include a training room, group exercise room, dance studio, family fitness center, family and child programs, youth sized circuit equipment room, restrooms and the existing gym area.
Site improvements for the facility will include a new pool area that will have a spray ground area and kiddy pool. Pavilions will provide shade and areas for activities. Four (4) family change rooms are conveniently located off of the pool area. A new athletic field with synthetic turf will replace the existing field. A new 6-lane, all weather track will be constructed around the athletic field. A new maintenance building will provide toilets, storage, and an announcer’s booth for the track and field. A new outdoor fitness trail system will traverse the entire site. A new parking lot will be constructed on the west side of the facility, while a portion of the existing parking lot on the east side will remain for employee parking. The facility will be provided with new electrical water and sewer service. The entire facility will receive a new automatic fire extinguisher system. The EPACT 2005 and LEED energy performance analyses were based on the requirements of ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2004. Although a portion of the facility is a renovation of existing structure, all the lighting and HVAC is new, and the rating analysis is based on new construction. We calculate the proposed building energy consumption is 50% less than the baseline building prescribed by the standard, resulting in 45.1% cost savings.
When completed in 2011, this project is anticipated to achieve LEED® Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Est. construction value: $38 Million.
